Finding Unity in Tradition: The Power of Wearing Judaica
Since October 7th, our community has faced profound emotional turmoil, grappling with an event that has left an indelible mark on the Jewish people. The pain is immeasurable, but in the midst of this heartache, we also find an opportunity to cultivate a much-needed sense of unity.
One striking observation this past year is the increase in Jews proudly wearing Judaica. The Star of David, once a Bat Mitzvah gift, is now being donned more frequently. It’s become a go-to gift for birthdays, and even elementary-aged children are eager to choose their own. This symbol embodies Jewish pride, sending a clear message: “I’m a proud Jew.” As we approach the New Year, I want to reflect on how wearing Judaica not only expresses our pride but also fosters unity among our people.
In recent years, the divisions within our community have intensified, adding to our collective suffering. Yet, one of the most beautiful aspects of being Jewish is our ability to unite despite our diverse backgrounds and cultures. At our core, we are one people, and nothing encapsulates this unity more than the Star of David. This iconic symbol reinforces the relationship between God and humanity, reminding us of our deep connections to one another.
As we approach the anniversary of October 7th and prepare to usher in a sweet New Year filled with a complex mix of anxiety, fear, gratitude, sadness, and above all, hope, wearing a Star of David (or even a Hamsa or Chai) sends an unspoken message: we are in this together. Our strength is unbreakable. While so much feels beyond our control, fostering connection among Jews of varying practices and cultures is well within our reach. The greatest gift we can offer to elevate our community’s consciousness is to celebrate and embrace our shared identity.
So, whether your chicken soup for Rosh Hashanah features matzah balls, Gondi balls, or is spiced with Hawaji, when you see someone you don’t know wearing a Star of David, take a moment to make eye contact. In that brief exchange, you’ll feel an unspoken sense of validation and connection. The more we embrace these moments, the stronger our collective bond becomes.
Shana Tova!
